Spirit Soul Body = Three Parts!!

== Man is a “part” being!! ==

(1 Thessalonians 5:23) And the very GOD of peace sanctify you wholly;

and I pray GOD your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved

blameless unto the coming of our LORD Jesus Christ.

Clarification: We "are" a spirit we "have" a soul; and we "live" in a body.

Editor's Note: IF this is a NEW concept to you, PLEASE, read on . . .Take your time, let your "inner-man" discern the truth of this word. PRESS IN ! !

What is the significance of understanding that the 'soul' of man is a separate entity from the "spirit" of man??

What consequence would there be, for us to 'divide' the 'soul' from the 'spirit'??

How does this knowledge benefit the spiritual life of a person??

How can we understand 'spiritual life' if we don't know what is the extent of the realm of the spirit??

Without such understanding how can we grow 'spiritually'? If we fail to understand the difference between 'spirit and soul' it is fatal to spiritual maturity. We often account what is from the soul as spiritual and thus we remain in a soulish state and DO NOT seek after what is really spiritual!!!

Spiritual 'knowledge' is very important to spiritual 'life'. On the one hand, the most ignorant person, with just the slightest idea of the division of 'soul and spirit' , may yet experience such a dividing, in real life. On the other hand, the most informed person, completely conversant with the truth concerning 'spirit and soul', may nonetheless have no experience of it. Far better is that person who may have both the 'knowledge' and the 'experience'. The majority, however, lack such experience. Consequently, it is well initially to lead these to know the different functions of 'spirit and soul' and to encourage them to seek what is 'truly spiritual'.

You may have already guessed that this paper comes from the perspective described fully in the Bible!! Therefore, all of what is written here can be discovered in the Word, IF you are a believer. IF NOT, then I believe, that AS you continue reading this paper,

you will have no recourse but to "study, to show yourself approved", or

"continue in your ignorance" and quit now.

Another thing you will have to believe in is Creation and a Creator, ...GOD!

Please, for YOUR sake, continue reading . . . . .

The Holy Bible Is:

Looking back to a speech made by W.A. Richardson, as he presented a copy of the Holy Bible to a country school:

This Book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of Salvation, doom of sinners, and happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.

Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.

It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s character

Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully, it is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever.

Let’s continue our journey in the Word....

In the beginning, Man was designated a "living soul": "And Jehovah GOD formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (Genesis 2:7) And it was there that the 'spirit and body' met and through which his 'individuality' was birthed. This "breath of life" is NOT to be confused with "GOD's Holy Spirit"- which differs from 'our human spirit'...

By an (imperfect) illustration: Drop some dye into a cup of water. The dye and water will blend into a third substance called ink. In like manner the two independent elements of 'spirit and body' combine to become a living 'soul'. But, the analogy fails in that the 'soul' = produced by the combining of the 'spirit and body' = becomes an 'independent, indissoluble element'... thus, "three parts"... three specific elements!!

Confused?? Read on . . . .

What a person 'IS' depends on how their soul 'IS'. The soul represents us and expresses our 'individuality'. It is the organ of our  free will   [we'll be talking about this a lot!], the organ in which the 'spirit and body' are completely merged. If our 'soul' wills to obey God, it will allow the 'spirit' to rule over us. The 'soul', if it chooses, can suppress the 'spirit' and take some 'other delight', as 'lord' of the man.

It is through the 'physical body' that we come into contact with the material, physical world. Hence we may label the 'body' as that part which gives us world-consciousness.

The soul constitutes the inner 'life' of man and comprises the intellect (mind), which aids us in this present state of existence; the emotions, which proceed from our innermost senses (feelings), and our will (volition), which allows us to 'discern and decide' how we live. Since the soul belongs to our own 'self' and reveals our 'personality' it is termed the part of self-consciousness.

The spirit is that part by which we commune with God and by which alone we are able to come in contact with and commune with, Him. Because it tells us of our relationship with God, the spirit is called the element of God-consciousness. God dwells* in the 'spirit'; self dwells in the 'soul'; while senses dwell in the 'body'.

*dwells = remember, "Man is a 'three part' being... God dwells "in the spirit" [small 's'] of man! IF we are "born of The Spirit" of God, as in: (John 3:5-8) ...v6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. This does NOT say/imply that the Spirit of GOD "takes over" or "takes the place of" - our spirit!! [This will be discussed in the section: "Communion" . . . coming soon!]

     ** Here would be a good place to sit back and let this sink in to your spirit....

Thus says the LORD:

That is what is meant by the Scriptures which say that no mere man has ever seen, heard or even imagined what wonderful things God has ready for those who love the Lord.

But we know about these things because God has sent His Spirit to tell us, and His Spirit searches out and shows us all of God’s deepest secrets.
